Attitude and Motivation of Parents Regarding Their Children's Language Learning

Many experts say that parents play an important role in developing children's attitudes towards language. According to Zimbardo (1999), attitude is the individual's negative and positive assessment of things, events, activities, ideas or anything in the environment. Motivation according to the UP Diksiyonaryong Pilipino is the reason or reasons a person has for what he did or said. Wong (2000) emphasized that parents' feelings and attitudes influence children's language Learning,, Based on Oskamp (1977), children can develop an attitude towards something based on his experience regarding it but it cannot be denied that it is achieved through teaching and showing the attitude of the parents regarding this.

Attitude and Motivation of Parents Regarding Their Children's Language Learning

This research aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the preferred language of parents that they want their children to learn,?

2. What is the attitude of parents regarding the language they want their children to learn,?

3. Based on the parents' attitude, how do they support their children's Learning, of this language?

Using the descriptive method or descriptive research method, the researcher identified the language that parents want their children to learn,, the attitude of parents regarding this language and the ways in which they support their children's language Learning,, son The researcher used a questionnaire and interviews with parents to collect the necessary data for this study.

Convenience sampling is the type of sampling used by the researcher in this study. Respondents who are easy to reach and interview are usually included in this type of sampling. The participants in this research were selected based on the researcher's preference.

The selected participants in this study are the parents who teach nursery, junior kinder and senior kinder in Dorcas Samaritan Academe Inc., a private school in the town of Amadeo, Cavite. Based on the 2012-2013 school year. The total population of parents is sixty-nine (69). The researcher only selected half the number of parents in each grade level. The total number of participants is twenty-eight (28) or forty-one percent (41%) of the total population of parents.

In this research, the responses of those who chose the Filipino language and the English language were analyzed separately. The responses of the participants to the questionnaire were listed and tabulated in order to perform the appropriate statistical application. This study requires only the simple acquisition of frequency counts and percentages. Because of this, taking the percentage was used for the statistical application of the data. By obtaining the percentage, the answer to the three problems presented in this research was found.

Learning, Outcome:

Based on the analysis done, here is the outcome of the study:

1. Of the total number of 28 participating parents, 19 wanted their children to learn, the Filipino language while only 9 chose the English language. It is noteworthy that more parents chose the Filipino language than the English language.

 Among the parents who chose the Filipino language, many of them agree that using this language, their children will listen to what the other person is saying, they will be able to express their thoughts clearly, they will be able to express their feelings freely and experience, they will be ready to read early, they can easily learn, writing skills, they can describe well what they have seen or seen, they can improve their interactions with others and they can easily understand their homework.

This is also the outcome of the participants who chose the English language. Many of them agree that the skills previously mentioned can be learn,ed by their children using the English language. It only shows the attitude of the parents towards the language they have chosen. Whatever language they choose, they believe that using it their children will acquire the skills that their children need to learn,.

As for the ways parents practice in their children's language Learning,, they do many things to help their children learn, their chosen language, whether Filipino or English. These methods such as listening and talking to their children using this language, teaching them new vocabulary, singing, reading them stories, encouraging them to watch shows in this language, encouraging them to communicate -conversation using this language and using it to teach them in their homework is always or sometimes carried out by them to support their children's language Learning,.

Recommendation:

Based on the outcome and summary of the study, the following are the recommendations developed by the researcher:

Parents should be clear about what language they want their children to learn,.

It is also a good way for parents to determine their belief in the language they want their children to learn, because whatever their attitude is, there is a high possibility that they will influence their children's attitude regarding this language.

It is appropriate for parents to continue using different methods to improve their children's language Learning,.

Communication with teachers is also important to further enhance children's language Learning,.
