Many experts say that parents play an important role in developing children's attitudes towards language. According to Zimbardo (1999), attitude is the individual's negative and positive assessment of things, events, activities, ideas or anything in the environment. Motivation according to the UP Diksiyonaryong Pilipino is the reason or reasons a person has for what he did or said. Wong (2000) emphasized that parents' feelings and attitudes influence children's language Learning,, Based on Oskamp (1977), children can develop an attitude towards something based on his experience regarding it but it cannot be denied that it is achieved through teaching and showing the attitude of the parents regarding this.
This research aims to answer the following questions:
1. What is the preferred language of parents that they want
their children to learn,?
2. What is the attitude of parents regarding the language
they want their children to learn,?
3. Based on the parents' attitude, how do they support their
children's Learning, of this language?
Using the descriptive method or descriptive research method,
the researcher identified the language that parents want their children to learn,,
the attitude of parents regarding this language and the ways in which they
support their children's language Learning,, son The researcher used a
questionnaire and interviews with parents to collect the necessary data for
this study.
Convenience sampling is the type of sampling used by the
researcher in this study. Respondents who are easy to reach and interview are
usually included in this type of sampling. The participants in this research
were selected based on the researcher's preference.
The selected participants in this study are the parents who
teach nursery, junior kinder and senior kinder in Dorcas Samaritan Academe
Inc., a private school in the town of Amadeo, Cavite. Based on the 2012-2013
school year. The total population of parents is sixty-nine (69). The researcher
only selected half the number of parents in each grade level. The total number
of participants is twenty-eight (28) or forty-one percent (41%) of the total
population of parents.
In this research, the responses of those who chose the
Filipino language and the English language were analyzed separately. The
responses of the participants to the questionnaire were listed and tabulated in
order to perform the appropriate statistical application. This study requires
only the simple acquisition of frequency counts and percentages. Because of
this, taking the percentage was used for the statistical application of the
data. By obtaining the percentage, the answer to the three problems presented
in this research was found.
Learning, Outcome:
Based on the analysis done, here is the outcome of the
study:
1. Of the total number of 28 participating parents, 19
wanted their children to learn, the Filipino language while only 9 chose the
English language. It is noteworthy that more parents chose the Filipino
language than the English language.
This is also the outcome of the participants who chose the
English language. Many of them agree that the skills previously mentioned can
be learn,ed by their children using the English language. It only shows the
attitude of the parents towards the language they have chosen. Whatever
language they choose, they believe that using it their children will acquire
the skills that their children need to learn,.
As for the ways parents practice in their children's
language Learning,, they do many things to help their children learn, their
chosen language, whether Filipino or English. These methods such as listening
and talking to their children using this language, teaching them new
vocabulary, singing, reading them stories, encouraging them to watch shows in
this language, encouraging them to communicate -conversation using this
language and using it to teach them in their homework is always or sometimes
carried out by them to support their children's language Learning,.
Recommendation:
Based on the outcome and summary of the study, the following
are the recommendations developed by the researcher:
Parents should be clear about what language they want their
children to learn,.
It is also a good way for parents to determine their belief
in the language they want their children to learn, because whatever their
attitude is, there is a high possibility that they will influence their
children's attitude regarding this language.
It is appropriate for parents to continue using different
methods to improve their children's language Learning,.
Communication with teachers is also important to further
enhance children's language Learning,.
