Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian aggression in Ukraine, about 4.8 million jobs have been lost. If hostilities cease immediately, there could be a rapid recovery with the return of 3.4 million jobs, and if the military escalates further, job losses could reach 7 million.
This is stated in the report of the International Labor Organization (ILO).
The organization stated that the Ukrainian economy was seriously affected by the war. Since its beginning, 5.2 million refugees have left for neighboring countries, of which 2.75 million people are of working age - 1.2 million of them (43.5%) have previously worked, lost their jobs or resigned.
Displaced persons," the ILO said. The war in Ukraine, the report said, could also affect the labor market in neighboring countries, mainly Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. If hostilities continue, Ukrainian refugees will be forced to stay abroad for longer, putting additional pressure on the labor market and social protection systems of these neighboring states and increasing unemployment in many of them.
Due to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia is also experiencing a downturn in the economy and employment. This, in turn, significantly affects Central Asia, especially countries whose economies depend on remittances from the Russian Federation, such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
"If military actions and sanctions against Russia lead to the loss of jobs for migrant workers in the Russian Federation, and they return to their countries of origin, this will cause serious economic losses in Central Asia as a whole," the ILO said.
We will remind, according to sociological survey data, the number of Ukrainians returning to work is gradually increasing. At the end of April59% of citizens who had a job before the war continued to work.
